BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop Verot 54, Barron Collier 44: In Sunday’s tournament semifinals, Jerry Ashley and Austin Leslie scored 18 points each to lift the Vikings (9-2) past the 11-3 Cougars. The two were also strong on the boards, with Ashley pulling down 14 rebounds and Leslie making 14 rebounds. Ashley and Leslie combined to block seven Barron Collier shots. Bishop Verot faces Cardinal Gibbons in Monday afternoon’s tournament championship.

Saturday

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bishop Verot 51, Cardinal Gibbons 47: Cameron O’Halloran scored 19 points and Caroline Ward scored 15 as the Vikings (9-4) won two of three in the Queen of Palms tourney at ECS.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop Verot 61, NSU University 53: Gavin Williams scored 21 points for the Vikings (8-2). Austin Leslie had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Eddie Gore scored 17 points, and Jerry Ashley had 9 points and 14 rebounds.

NCT Christmas Tournament

Cape Coral 67, Pasco 40: The Seahawks won their last two in the tournament after falling in the opener, finishing the 2024 portion of their season with a 9-2 record.

Friday

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bishop Verot 72, Miami Ferguson 55: Austin Leslie poured in 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to power the Vikings (7-2). Gavin Williams scored 22 points, making 10 of his 13 shots for the game.

NCT Tournament

Cape Coral 54, Zephyrhills 38: The Seahawks bounced back from Thursday’s opening-round loss to improve their record to 8-2.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bishop Verot 62, Naples 35: Caroline Ward led the Vikings (8-4) with 26 points and Cameron O’Halloran scored 21 in a tournament held at Evangelical Christian School.

IDA BAKER LOSES COACH: Head coach Steve Howard has left the football program at Ida Baker to take the same position at East Lee County. East Lee had seen its coach, Herbans Paul, move on to coach at St. Petersburg Gibbs. While at Ida Baker, Howard’s teams were 0-20 over two seasons. Before joining the Bulldogs, Howard was the defensive coordinator at Immokalee.
