Verot downs Lakewood, 25-12, advances in football playoffs

FOOTBALL

Region 3A-3 semifinal

Bishop Verot 25, Lakewood 12: Bishop Verot will be traveling to Sarasota next week with a spot in the FHSAA Class 3 Final Four on the line. That follows Friday’s home win against Lakewood. Ayden Gonzalez caught touchdown passes of 9 and 16 yards from Carter Smith as Verot led 15-6 at halftime. Deshon Jenkins scored on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter, finishing the game with 171 yards rushing. The Vikings (9-3) added their final two points when Michah Anderson and Ryan Peteerson teamed up to sack Lakewood’s quarterback in the end zone for a safety. The Vikings now get a chance at revenge against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney. The Cougars, who rolled Bishop Verot 49-28 earlier this season, downed King’s Academy 56-28 in the other 3A-3 semifinal.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

North Fort Myers 41, Babcock 31 (OT): The Red Knights controlled the overtime 10-0. Bianca Iten totaled 23 points, 8 assists and 4 steals to lead North (1-1). Faith MacKay added 11 points, and Gia Molloy and Carolina Jenkins made five steals each.

BOYS SOCCER

Mariner 2, Gulf Coast 1: Neil Zela and Thomas Castano scored for the Tritons (6-0-0) got past Golden Gate. Justin Medero made an assist, and Federico Buitrago made four saves for the victory in goal.

Canterbury 3, North Fort Myers 1: The 6-0 Cougars left the Red Knights 1-4-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Mariner 8, Gulf Coast 0: The Tritons (5-0) poured seven goals into the Gulf Coast net in the first half on their way to the shutout win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Gateway 68, North Fort Myers 51: A slow first half proved to be the Red Knights’ undoing. North (0-2) scored 37 of its 51 points after intermission.

Ida Baker 59, Canterbury 56: West Powell scored 19 points and Marcus Quick had 18 as the Bulldogs earned their first win of the season (1-2). Alex Romanowicz pulled down 10 rebounds.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ida Baker 8, Bonita Springs 0: Aubrey Tansey scored five goals to power the Bulldogs (2-5-1) to victory. Maya Drew scored twice and made three assists. Alyssa Tubbs added a goal and Nancy Jaquiss made an assist.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Naples 63, North Fort Myers 62: Naples edged the Red Knights in North’s season opener.
