First round FHSAA playoffs

Immokalee 26, Cape Coral 19: Cape Coral (8-2) made a strong effort in its first playoff game since the 2020 pandemic season, but came up just short. The Seahawks led 12-7 late in the first quarter on Jermaine Skinner runs of 36 and 56 yards. Immokalee’s Jontay Hais scored the second and third of his four touchdowns to give the home team a 19-12 halftime lead. After catching Immokalee trying to pull off a punt fake deep in its own end, the Seahawks tied the score at 19 when Dereon Thomas caught a TD pass from Derek Hooker. Hais followed with his fourth touchdown, and Immokalee stopped Cape on a final drive to lock up the win.

Riverdale 34, North Fort Myers 14: North (5-4) stayed close for the first half of a Region 5A-3 first-round game, trailing 14-7 despite three turnovers. Christian Weber provided the Red Knights’ first score on a 5-yard run. However, Riverdae’s Cole Hayes scored four touchdowns, and had a pick-six by the Raiders’ defense put the game out of reach. Adrian Scott caught a 14-yard TD pass from Caedon Conn for North in the final two minutes.

Bishop Verot 35, Tarpon Springs 21: With their backs against the wall, the Vikings (8-3) scored the last 35 points of the game to advance in the Region 2A-3 playoffs. Tarpon Springs (6-5) led 21-0 and Bishop Verot star quarterback Carter Smith was on the sideline. Backup Austin Christaan struggled at first, but then led the Vikings to two scores before intermission. Deshon Jenkins ran in from 14 yards out to put Bishop Verot on the board late in the second period. Christaan hit Ayden Gonzalez with a 4-yard TD pass just before halftime. When the third quarter began, Smith returned to the field. Between a punishing running attack and a stout defense, Verot dominated the second half. Jenkins ran for another score, this time from 8 yards out. That was followed by Smith rushing 12 yards for a TD. Jenkins finished off the Spongers with his third touchdown, an 11-yard run. With the win, Bishop Verot earned home-field advantage for a region semifinal game with Lakewood (6-5), which upended Glades Central on Friday.
