Cape woman charged with petit theft
A woman police say has a hefty social media following was charged with shoplifting from a Cape Coral Target on Wednesday.
Cape Coral Police Department officers charged Marlena Velez, 22, with petit theft more than $100 and less than $750 after police say she scanned barcodes for cheaper items at the self-checkout at the Target on Pine Island Road.
Loss Prevention at the store told police that on Oct. 30, an unknown female entered the store and, once at the self-checkout, scanned false barcodes of 16 miscellaneous household goods and clothing items. The total loss of the items was valued at $500.32, which officials say was verified through Target’s security cameras.
CCPD posted the woman’s photo on its social media accounts to identify her.
Police state an anonymous caller saw the post and gave a possible identification of Velez, and provided them with her Instagram handle.
“Officers then found Marlena’s TikTok account, which documents her getting ready on October 30, 2024, in the same outfit and glasses and going to Target,” CCPD officials stated. “Marlena documents herself picking out items inside the store and placing them in her car after exiting the store.”
Police said Velez appears to be a content creator with almost 300,000 followers.
Officers located Marlena Velez and she was booked into the Lee County Jail this morning.
