Karen Maxwell, horticulture specialist and programs coordinator teaches a gardening class at Edison and Ford Winter Estates. PROVIDED

Throughout the year, Edison and Ford Winter Estates offers numerous gardening programs for adults, including classes, garden talks, and plant sales. On Jan. 21, new Florida residents and anyone new to gardening in Florida will have an opportunity to learn how to be a successful gardener in the sunshine state during the Intro to Florida Gardening, Part I class. Then, on Jan. 25, Intro to Florida Gardening, Part II will be offered.

Intro to Florida Gardening, Part I is designed to de-mystify the nuances of Florida soil, climate, and sub-tropical pests within the context of an extensive introduction to sub-tropical plants, shrubs and trees. Inclusive of an introduction to palms, this class includes a tour and continued discussion in the Estates’ Palmetum. Advance registration is required since space is limited. Part I will be held on Jan. 21 at 1:30 p.m. The cost of each class is $45 for Edison Ford members and $60 for non-members.

Intro to Florida Gardening, Part II is a continuation of the topics introduced in Part I. The class covers the principles of Florida Friendly Gardening, gardening for Florida butterflies, proper use of fertilizers for sub-tropical trees and plants, irrigation tips, weed and invasive plant identification, and plant selection for the South Florida landscape. This class includes a tour and continued discussions in the Estates’ butterfly, Florida native, Moonlight and cycad gardens. Advance registration is required since space is limited. Part II will be held on Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. The cost of each class is $45 for Edison Ford members and $60 for non-members.

Classes are held in the air-conditioned Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council building next to the Estates (enter across from the Estates’ parking lot on Larchmont Avenue). Wearing comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat is recommended, along with bringing drinking water. All participants will receive a 20% discount coupon good toward plants in the Garden Shoppe.
